CREDIT: AIA/CES: 2 Most of us are now familiar with LEED®, which is a voluntary green building rating system for various building and project types. While LEED® was never intended as a mandatory “green building code,” many jurisdictions now require LEED® certification for their own municipal buildings, and some require LEED® certification for private buildings as well. Recently several code language green building standards have been developed, including ASHRAE 189, California’s CALGreen, the ICC’s International Green Construction Code and others. In this interactive presentation, we will review several of these standards and discuss the pros and cons of having a jurisdiction, such as Chicago, adopt a green building code, which would mandate many requirements similar to those in the LEED® rating system.
